Connect Who or what is your inspiration in business?

As a Chicago mother carrying past childhood adversities, traumas, poverty & loss, including my brother & father, I experienced a painful yet profound transformation. In 2000, I lost my innocent 9-year-old son, Janari Andre Ricks (J.A.R.), to gun violence. A generous honor-roll student, Janari touched many lives at a young age. How do you stay motivated?

My daily motivation to organize 1 JAR Foundation & its events stems from a Call to Action to uplift my community, mothers & families affected by similar events, and the nation, reflecting the spirit my son embodied. Through annual Back-to-School & Holiday Toy Drives, I've remained committed to making a positive impact, from my love for my son reflecting my love for others and dedication to my community, moved by the impact Janari said he wanted to have on the world when he grew up!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use this grant to further the foundation's reach beyond the near north side, branding original activities & merchandise that empower youth! (Books, Coloring books, Clothing, Accessories, etc., adorned with affirming messages for purposeful lives.) 1 JAR brand, a haven to nurture healing & skill-building, I envision Janari proud of his dreams realized, proving quality of life vs. quantity leaves a lasting legacy. Children are our future; what better place to start?!
